Where did the name “Nefarious” originate from?
The name Nefarious! originated from me when I started out as a rapper. I sucked. *laughs* I used to rap about what everybody else rapped about, money, girls, drugs, and a ton of other shit I wasn’t really about and activities I never participated in. I went to school one day and it was a vocabulary word, and it just fit my obsession with being bad. Fortunately I grew out of it, quit rapping, and became a nice dude. The name stays though.
For those who don’t know, what is Cosmic Souls Collective? And what does it represent?
The Cosmic Souls Collective is a group of four producers: Know:Juander, Time Travel, Juno Complex, and myself. We are just on a mission to produce good music. Our styles are different but when we come together… we have been called the Slaughterhouse of production *laughs*.

How long have you been making beats?
I have been making beats since my Sophomore year in high school. I just graduated last June so you do the math. I basically started making beats out of necessity. I was in a rap group with some friends and we didn’t have a producer so I took that role. Eventually the group broke up and I quit rapping for producing completely.
When did you realize you had the potential, to make beats?
I don’t really know. When I started out it was all for fun so I can’t really tell you when I decided to take it seriously. Probably after I dropped my first album with the homies SLik d and Siopao J (collectively known as Less Than Three). We did that album for fun, but got a huge response from people who loved it. That’s when we realized we had potential to do something great.
What are your influences?
My influences range from having girl troubles to just hearing a dope song somewhere. Things like seeing my peers succeed motivates me to try and succeed myself. For example, when the homie Amor Jones’s album Epic Failure…(I produced 4 tracks on it) was deemed one of the hottest albums of the summer by MySpace Music it humbled me. Like, we really are good enough to do anything. Like, “Out of the thousands albums that dropped this summer my homie Amor Jones’ shit was picked?” That says something. Fuck, I probably didn’t even answer this question correctly *laughs*. Next question.
How did you come up with the concept for your recent album “More Than Music”?
For the title I was just talking to my homie BC about how I wanted to drop another beat tape and couldn’t think of a name. He is a dope rapper also, best lyricist I know. He randomly said “More Than Music” and it was crazy because it started out as a joke and I turned it into a reality. As a producer, people who don’t produce view beats as just a beat. I have had people ask me “where is the rapper?”. And it is frustrating that some people can’t appreciate your craft for what it is. So that is literally how I feel about what I do. It’s More Than Music.
What’s your favorite track off of “More Than Music”? And why?
My favorite track would have to be “The Hard Way” because I had to make that beat without my Propellerheads ReCycle program working properly.. In other words it was very challenging chopping the sample and I had to do it well, the hard way.
What type of studio equipment do you use to make your beats?
Pleads the fiiiiiiiiiiiiif.
Are there any steps or guidelines as to how you go about chopping your samples?
Not at all. I usually just go with whatever sounds best. (dunno how i can make this answer longer haha)
Besides sampling various records, do you have original content or you just perfer to sample?
I prefer to sample. I never really learned how to play the keys (well).
Are their any producers or artist you would like to work with? If so then whom?
Id love to work with Little Brother and the whole Justus League fam. When it comes to beats maybe J Bizness and 14KT.
What do you have plan for the rest of the year as far as beat tapes, instrumental albums etc. ?
I am hoping I can get my next album called The Soul Dojo finished this year featuring various emcees over my production. The Cosmic Souls Collective will album drop a beat tape called The Teaser soon and probably another project. That is all I can speak on right now. Word booty.
